Cant believe its been well over a year since we recorded this album!!! The original DLC E.P we recorded on a minimal budget and with a ‘DIY’ attitude over a period of about 4 weeks in late 2011 but the majority of tracks were concieved alot earlier! During October of 2010, I took a holiday from my home city, Auckland, New Zealand to Australia to jam with Casey, in this 2 week session the seeds of songs that would eventually be on the EP, were sown. We demoed up 3 songs in this period, ‘Lust Fame Money’, ‘De La Cruz’ and ‘Fire Inside. ‘Lust Fame Money’ actually had a totally different feel, verse melody, lyrics and chorus right up until the last week of tracking the EP when I had a moment of inspiration and changed it just before vocal tracking. Theres a recording of the original getting around somewhere in the vaults that hopefully wont ever see the light haha!. The track ‘De La Cruz’ was written in one night and kept its original form, with Case and I recording the demo in its entirety one evening, with both of us contributing to the guitar riffs, lyrics and structure. With only slight changes to riffs and lyrics, this song essentially remains as it was orginally written. Infact, im pretty sure the band name is somehow caught up in this recording session, weather we named the song after the band or the band after the song, I cant quite recall! With ‘Fire Inside’, I had had the chorus melody, lyrics and intro riff humming in my head, buzzing around in my skull for about a year. They actually came to me (as inspiration often does) at a mates house in NZ having copious beers one night. Once these ideas were workshopped, with a catchy, harmony style verse riff and solo provided by Casey and RJ, it became the definative slow, earthmoving, power ballad on the EP release and definately one of my favourite DLC songs. The track ‘Runaway’ was a spontaneous writing moment I had one day, to be honest we dont paticularly like the track and although we try not to play it often, it sadly remains a favourite among many fans haha. ‘Good As It Gets’ ,I fxckin LOVE this track, it came together one rainy night at rehearsal in Brisbane, (i believe a decent song will write itself) an intro riff inspired by our bassist Jakki, a verse riff by Casey and RJ, I added the pre-chorus and key change chorus, and ofcourse Laceys pounding drums, it created a powerful collaboration and opening track in a traditional 80s rock style. Its my kind of song, high raspy vox, awesome guitars, melodic twists and huge backing vox!. ‘Back To The 80s’ was originally an instrumental piece Casey had written many years beforehand, and incidentaly the first track of his I ever heard back in 2007!! Casey loves his major chord tonalitys, im a minor chord boy but with a little bit of tweaking, a bit of pop sensibility, I chucked in some catchy vocal hooks, adding to make this track the most ‘mainstream’ sounding song on the EP, whilst keeping an 80s feel production-wise. Good times! The E.P was recorded with original DLC bassist Jakki Jack, prior to his leaving the band to pursue his career in medicine. All tracks were both demo’d and recorded at Caseys ‘Shred Shed’ studio in South East Queensland, Australia. Boom!!
